To be or to do?

This is the title of my first ever blog post. Dated from Nov 9, 2006. The topic: Servant leadership. I wrote: this morning, while I was driving to my office, I was wondering what I would teach in a seminar on Servant leadership. Several ideas crossed my mind, but one thought became especially important to me. At the end of each lesson I would like the students to take one thought home. Usually, in leadership courses this is sth to do, like going every morning through the “To Do” list for the day. But I would want the students to take home sth “to be” rather than “to do”. To learn “to be” sth is much more difficult and time consuming than to learn “to do” sth, but since the being of the leader is at the heart of servant leadership, to learn “to be” is the key to growth as servant leader.
