Google insights into Servant leadership
I’ve googled both „servant leadership“ and „leadership“. The google search for „leadership“ lists 143 m results, „servant leadership“ 336,000, which means that about every 400th „leadership“ post on the web, talks about „servant leadership“.
When I had searched the web for the term “Servant leadership” one year ago, last June28, 2008, google listed 310,000 search entries in the Web. The google search for the word “leadership” brought 168 m results. Only in every 560th link, which was listed as “leasdership” google search result, “servant leadership” was mentioned.
This means that „servant leadership“ has increased its relative google-measured web presence by about 30% within the last year. Of course, these figures do not tell us anything about the content or the quality of the web entries. It is only a quantitive measure, not a qualitative one.
Now the situation in the German speaking world. There is no single equivalent to the term „servant leadership“ in the German language. The most often used ones are „Dienende Führung“, „Dienende Unternehmensführung“, and „Dienende Leiterschaft“.
On June 22, 2009, google lists 15.7 m results for “Führung”. „Dienende Führung“, „Dienende Unternehmensführung“, and „Dienende Leiterschaft“ together are mentioned in 700 web posts (only!). While on the English-speaking web „servant leadership“ is mentioned in every 400th „leadership“ discussion, the German equivalent is mentioned in every 22,000th „Führung“ web posts.
One year ago, last June 28, 2008, the ratio was similar. Only in every 23,000th google search result for “Führung” or “Leitung” the servant element was mentioned via expressions like „Dienende Führung“, „Dienende Unternehmensführung“, and „Dienende Leiterschaft“.
Summary: Based on google search results from June 2008 and June 2009
- Servant leadership is on the rise in the internet world
- The German equivalent is still much behind its English counterpart, in absolute as well as in relative numbers
For all infused with the servant leadership virus there remains much to do. The Englishspeakers can help the Germans to grow, and above all, there is much hope for more servant leaders to come worldwide.
